Box Score

Auburndale, Fla. - The Lakers used dominant pitching and defense to claim a 5-0 victory over Mansfield today, moving them to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 on their spring trip. Joe Jablonski shut down the Mountaineers for seven innings, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out eight to earn the victory.

Steve Anderson got the scoring started for the Lakers in the first inning when he went deep with a two-run shot over the left field fence for his first homerun of the year, fifth of his career.

In the fourth inning, after Giancarlo Brugnoni was hit by a pitch and stole second base, Cody Grice looped a single into shallow right field which brought Brugnoni around to score, making it a 3-0 Grand Valley State lead.

The Lakers capped off the game's scoring in the sixth inning, when an Andrew Trepel three-bagger brought in Grice from second to make it a 4-0 game. Kyle Gendron followed that up with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Trepel in for the 5-0 lead.

Jablonski's victory was his first of the year, and Kevin Schultz came in to close the game down in the eighth and ninth innings, preserving the victory for the Lakers. Chris Rudenga had a sliding catch in left field to end the game with a man on third base, clinching the shutout for Grand Valley State.

Trepel led the way with a 3-for-5 line on offense, scoring one run and driving in one. Grice was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Anderson went 1-for-5 with one run and two RBI on his homerun. Paul Young and Brad Raj had the other two hits for the Lakers.

Schultz finished the game with a line of two innings pitched, three hits allowed, one walk, and one strikeout.

Grand Valley State continues their spring trip tomorrow (Mar. 9) at 11:30 a.m. when they play a single game against Lock Haven.
