Super Sophomores Lead Lakers to Victory in First Game of Spring Trip

March 6, 2010

Box Score

Winter Haven, Fla. - #5 Grand Valley State (2-1) used a barrage of hits and a stellar pitching outing to take down Missouri-St. Louis by a score of 18-1. Sophomores Steve Anderson and Cody Grice went a combined 7-for-9 while sophomore Kyle Schepel (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing two hits, and one run (zero earned), while striking out four to earn the victory.

UMSL got on the board in the first inning after a drive to deep right field skipped off the fielder's glove, allowing the runner from first to score. This was the only offense UMSL would be able to put up for the game, though, as Schepel shut down the Tritons for the remainder of his outing.

GVSU responded in the bottom of the second inning, as a Robert Martin sacrifice fly brought in Paul Young to tie the game at one. After a Steve Anderson stolen base to move him to second, Jay Tharrett drove him in with a single to center field to take the lead.

Cory Phillips made the most of his opportunity to play, as he came into the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and hit a double over the left fielder's head to clear the bases and make it a 17-1 game at the time.

Anderson went 3-for-3 with two runs and two runs batted in to go along with a stolen base, while Grice went 4-for-6 with two runs, a walk, and three runs batted in to lead the Laker offense. Tharrett also went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, while All-American Kyle Gendron went 2-for-3 with one run, two runs batted in, and two walks.

Kevin Schultz and Jared Knuth combined for three innings of one-hit ball to finish out the game for the Lakers.

Grand Valley State continues their spring trip tomorrow (Mar. 6) when they take on St. Joseph's (Ind.) in a double-header, beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST.
