Grand Valley State opened the 2010 softball season with a tripleheader at the Rebel Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on Friday (Mar. 5). The Lakers dropped a 5-4 decision to Dominican, then fell 10-2 to #6 Winona State, before capping the day with a 15-2 thumping of Cedarville, which featured a 10-run fourth inning by GVSU.
The Lakers gave up three runs in the first inning against Dominican (4-5) in the season opener, falling behind 4-1 in the fifth inning. GVSU rallied back to score a run in the sixth inning on an RBI double from Becky Gill and plated two runs in the seventh on a run-scoring single from senior Breanne Kronberg and an RBI triple from sophomore Carli Raisutis. With two outs, Raisutis was on third base as the tying run, but unable to score and tie the game.
Sophomore Andrea Nicholson took the loss, giving up five runs on 12 hits, while walking one and striking out four. Freshman second baseman Kayleigh Bertram went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while both Raisutis and senior Tina Briggs were 2-for-4 at the plate.
Against #6 Winona State (2-0), the Lakers fell behind 4-0 after the top of the first inning, but scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Becky Plummer tallied GVSU's only base hit in the game - an RBI single - which was followed later in the frame by a bases-loaded hit by pitch on freshman Emily Holt to make the score 4-2. Winona State, however, would score five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to close the game with the eight-run mercy rule. Senior Lauren Rohan was tagged with the loss, after allowing all 10 runs in 4.2 innings pitched.
GVSU was able to close the day with an easy victory in the nightcap against Cedarville (4-8), scoring three runs in the second inning, 10 runs in the fourth frame, and two more in the fifth to push ahead, 15-0. Senior designated hitter Stephanee Schrader started the scoring with a two-run triple to right field in the third inning. In the 10-run fourth inning, Becky Gill also totaled a two-run triple to right field, freshman Katie Martin hit her first career homer with a three-run jack, Schrader added a run-scoring single, and Jackie Teutsch picked up an RBI with a single to left field.
Martin pitched all five innings for her first collegiate victory, allowing two runs on six hits, with both runs coming in the fifth inning. At the plate, Martin was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Schrader was a perfect 4-for-4, scored three times, and drove in four runs, while Kronberg and Plummer each added two base hits. Gill drove in three runs and senior Lesley Bates knocked in a pair of Lakers.
Grand Valley State takes on Lycoming at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (Mar. 6) and has a rematch with Winona State at 1:30 p.m.
