Final Stats
Urbana, Ohio -
Grand Valley State split a pair of games at the Urbana Tournament on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 20), falling to the host Blue Knights 1-0 in the opening game, and using three homers to defeat Lake Superior State by a 7-2 score in game two. The three teams will play each other again on Sunday afternoon in Urbana, Ohio.
After the split on Saturday, Grand Valley State is 8-8 on the season. In the opener against Urbana (6-7), the Lakers were just unable to put any offense together, as sophomore righthander Andrea Nicholson tossed a quality game on the hill for GVSU. Nicholson gave up an unearned run in the first inning and was only touched up for six hits in six innings of work. She struck out five batters and did not issue a walk.
Urbana's run came on an RBI single after the Blue Knights put a runner on base via on an error, as the Lakers had recorded the first two outs of the inning. GVSU left a runner on base in five of the seven innings, including a pair of stranded runners in both the third and sixth innings. Sophomore Maggie Kerrigan reached on a one-out bunt single in the top of the seventh, but was stranded at first base, as Urbana pulled out the one-run victory.
Kerrigan totaled half of Grand Valley State's base hits, as she went 2-for-2 in the game. Freshman centerfielder Nellie Kosola notched a double, while third baseman Kayleigh Bertram was 1-for-3 in the contest. Nicholson falls to 3-3 on the year with the tough loss.
Against Lake Superior State in game two, GVSU pulled out the big bats, as freshman Katie Martin totaled a pair of two-run homers to help herself out on the mound, as both runs she allowed in the game were unearned. The reigning GLIAC Player of the Week, Martin now has six homers in the first 15 games of her freshman season and is 4-3 on the mound.
Senior Stephanee Schrader also hit a two-run home run against LSSU, her second roundtripper of the season. Those three two-run homers from Martin and Schrader were coupled with an RBI double from freshman Emily Holt to provide all seven runs for Grand Valley State.
GVSU will take on Lake Superior State at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, followed by a 2:00 p.m. contest with Urbana.
