#9 Grand Valley State (12-3, 4-0 GLIAC claimed a GLIAC sweep at Hillsdale College friday afternoon. The Lakers claimed game one by a 12-2 scored, followed by a 13-1 win in the nightcap. GVSU and Hillsdale will complete the three-game set Saturday at 12 noon.
Game 1
GVSU scored early and often in the opener, scoring three runs in the top of the first en route to the 12-2 victory. Sophomore CF Cody Grice led off the game with a solo HR to left, followed by a Chris Rudenga single up the middle. 2B Kyle Gendron single to center and 1B Cory Maguire walked to load the bases. DH Steve Anderson singled to left to score Rudenga and Gendron to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Anderson homered to left in the third and GVSU added three more runs in the fourth. C Zach Laupp singled with one out in the fourth and Eric Ponegaled doubled to center. Grice followed with a two-run double and later scored on a Rudenga single to up the Laker lead to 7-1.
The Chargers scored their second run in the bottom of the fourth, but GVSU put the game away with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Anderson opened the fifth with a single and advanced to third on back-to-back passed balls. RF Paul Young singled home Anderson, while Laupp doubled to left. Young scored on a groundout by Ponegalek and following a Grice walk Rudenga singled home Ponegalek. Grice ended the inning by scoring on a passed ball. Young closed the scoring with a single to center that scored Torre Aguirre who was pinch running for Maguire who walked to open the inning.
Joe Jablonski upped his record to 3-0 on the year with the complete-game win. Jablonski yielded two runs, one earned on seven hits with five strikeouts. Grice was 2-3 with three runs, three RBI a solo HR and a double, while Anderson was 3-3 with three runs, three RBI and a solo HR. Rudenga was 3-5 with an RBI, while Young was 2-4 with two RBI. Laupp was 3-4 with a double and Gendron was 2-5. GVSU's 16 hits contributed to the 12 runs.
Game 2
GVSU scored in every inning en route to the 13-1 win. The Lakers pounded out 16 hits, including two home runs and a triple. Grice led off with a walk, advanced to second on a balk and moved to third on a groundout by Rudenga. Gendron delivered a run-scoring single to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead and later scored on a single to center by SS Andrew Trepel. C Jared Cowan led off the second with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt from Phillips. Grice and Rudenga tallied back-to-back singles to score Cowan, while they scored later on a throwing error by the shortstop. Cowan hit a two-run HR in the third, while Gendron hit a solo shot in the fourth to give GVSU an 8-0 lead.
Grice's triple in the fifth scored Young who opened the inning with a walk, while Hillsdale plated its only run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo HR. GVSU added a run in the top of the sixth with a Trepel single that scored Maguire, while Phillips led off the three-run seventh with a solo HR to left. Aguirre's pinch-hit single scored Grice and Brian Robinson's single scored Aguirre to close out the Laker scoring.
Cory Rademacher (1-0) picked up the complete-game win in his first collegiate start. Rademacher yielded one run on eight hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Grice was 3-3 with a triple and three runs scored, while Gendron was 2-5 with two runs, two RBI and a HR. Cowan was 2-4 with two runs, two RBI and a HR for the Laker offense. Rudenga and Trepel each collected a pair of hits.
Notes...Grice hit for the cycle for the second straight doubleheader...He was 5-6 with six runs scored in the two games.
