The Grand Valley State men's swimming & diving team scored 866 points en route to capturing the 2010 GLIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship in Detroit, Mich. at Wayne State University. GVSU's title was its second in three year and third since 2005. Defending GLIAC Champion Wayne State finished second with 710.5 points, followed by Ashland (701), Indianapolis (512.5) and Lewis (410). The Lakers will now prepare for the NCAA DII National Championships March 10-13 in Canton, Ohio.
Sophomore Raphael Santos captured his second GLIAC title and set a WSU pool record with his first-place finish in the 100 backstroke in an NCAA DII "A" qualifying time of 1:49.37. The Lakers' Jordan Schrotenboer also hit the "A" mark with his second-place finish (1:50.96), while Jon Bardsley hit the "B" standard when he finished ninth (1:54.62).
Junior Jeff Pauza hit the NCAA DII "B" standard with his seventh-place finish in the 1000 freestyle (9:41.11). Sophomore David Hayhow also hit the "B" when he touched ninth in 9:44.80. Senior Matt Witkowski finished second in the 100 freestyle and hit the NCAA "B" mark when he touched the wall in 46.34. Sophomore Joe Sayre touched eighth (48.71), followed by Lantson Gordon in 10th (47.76) and Derek Mead in 11th (47.82).
Senior Chris Conner tallied a fifth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and hit the "B" standard with his time of 2:08.93. Senior Collin Perry recorded a seventh-place finish (2:12.08), while Hans Hill hit the "B" mark when he finished ninth in 2:07.79. Kurt VonEhr finished 10th (2:12.31) and Jimmy Donahue 12th (2:13.08). GVSU scored 47 points in the 200 breast.
Sophomore Aaron Beebe recorded a third-place finish and hit the NCAA "A" qualifying mark with his time of 1:51.08 in the 200 butterfly, while junior Justin Pattermann hit the "B" standard when he finished third in 1:52.63. Senior Evan Betts notched a second-place finish on the 3-meter board with his 11-dive score of 497.40. Reece Bierhalter finished fourth (447.60), Partrick VanDommelen fifth (441.55) and Will Hill sixth (430.00). Freshman Kyle Gebraad finished 10th (320.55) as the Lakers scored 78 points on the 3-meter board.
Jordan Schrotenboer, Joe Sayre, Derek Mead and Justin Pattermann touched fourth in the 400 free relay (3:07.27) to put the finishing touches on the 2010 title.
