No. 16 Lakers Claim 101-76 GLIAC Win Over Tiffin

Allendale, Mich. - The 16th-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers raced out to a 50-32 halftime lead and never looked back en route to a 101-76 GLIAC victory Tiffin University Saturday before a crowd of 1,173 at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC action, while Tiffin falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in GLIAC action. GVSU will host Olivet College Monday (Dec. 6) at 7 p.m.

The Lakers used a torrid shooting touch in opening 20 minutes to build an 18 point lead (50-32). GVSU connected on 18-of-36 shots from the floor, including a GVSU first-half record 11 three-pointers (11-19/57.9 percent) hit by six different players. GVSU built a 9-0 lead before Tiffin put points on the scoreboard at the 16:12 mark. Senior guard Justin Ringler hit a three-pointer at the 14:59 mark to give the Lakers a 16-4 lead. Junior guard Alvin Storrs started a string of six consecutive three-pointers for the Lakers. Storrs' three at the 9:26 mark put GVSU up 24-11 and was followed by a three-pointers from junior guard Wes Trammell, junior guard James Thomas and senior guard Justin Ringler. Trammell hit his second three to put the Lakers up 36-15 and Storrs ended the three-point run with his second (39-18).

Tiffin opened the second half with four straight points to cut the Laker advantage down to 14 (50-36), however, Thomas started a 10-0 run for the GVSU with jumper from the right wing. Ringler hit a running jumper from the paint and Trammell hit a jumper followed by two free throws. Ringler ended the run with a bucket in the paint to give the Lakers their largest lead of the game, 60-36, with 16:07 remaining. The Lakers' lead eventually reach 27 points (100-73) on a pair of free throws from Josh Roberson with under a minute left in the game.

Four Laker started scored in double figures, led by Ringler's 23-point, 6-rebound effort. Trammell and Storrs each contributed 18 points, with Storrs adding seven assists and four steals. Thomas added 13 points and three assists, while junior forward Nick Waddell chipped in seven points. GVSU hit 57.6 percent from the floor (34-for-59) and 75.0 percent from the charity stripe (21-for-28). The Lakers dished out 24 assists on their 34 buckets.
