No. 16 Lakers Open GLIAC Play With An 80-53 Over Ohio Dominican

Allendale, Mich. - No. 16 Grand Valley State claimed an 80-53 GLIAC victory over Ohio Dominican Thursday (Dec. 1) night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC action, while ODU, playing their first-ever GLIAC men's basketball game, falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will host Tiffin University Saturday at 1 p.m.

Grand Valley State started quickly and never slowed down in the opening 20 minutes. Junior center Nick Waddell scored on a layup at the 16:43 mark of the first half to break a 5-5 tie and that bucket started a 23-3 run over the next 9:13. Six different players scored for the Lakers during the run, including six points from junior guard Wes Trammell and four each from Waddell, senior forward Justin Ringler and junior forward Alvin Storrs. Storrs led the Lakers in the opening 20 minutes with 10 points, while Waddell added eight points off the bench. Ringler and Trammell each contributed six points as the Lakers shot 51.7 percent from the floor (15-29) and hit four-of-nine three-pointers (44.4 percent).

GVSU opened the second half in similar fashion as the first half, outscoring the Panthers 19-9 in the first 7:56 to build a 64-24 lead. The Lakers' lead continued to grow and when Storrs hit a three-pointer from the left corner the margin ballooned to 73-34 with 9:13 left. GVSU shot 57.1 percent in the second half, converting 12-of-21 shots.

Storrs tied a career-high with a game-high 18 points for the Lakers. He connected on 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, and pulled down seven rebounds. Waddell poured in a career-high 14 points off the bench, converting all four of his field goal attempts and all six of his free throw attempts. Waddell also pulled down five rebounds. Junior guard James Thomas chipped in 11 points, followed by 10 points each from Ringler and Trammell. Grand Valley State's bench outscored ODU 36-19 and the Lakes held a 34-16 advantage in points in the paint. In addition, The Lakers scored 27 points off Panther turnovers. GVSU hit 54.0 percent from the floor (27-for-50) and dished out 18 assists. The Lakers also outrebounded the Panthers 34-30 and recorded 11 steals.
