No. 14 GVSU Defeats Ohio Dominican 74-50 To Open GLIAC Action

Allendale, Mich. - No. 14 Grand Valley State used a 18-2 run early in the second half to pull away from Ohio Dominican for a 74-50 victory in the GLIAC opener for both schools. GVSU improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC action, while Ohio Dominican falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC play. GVSU will host Tiffin Saturday (Dec. 4) at 3 p.m.

 

Grand Valley State led 29-23 at the half behind seven points and seven rebounds from sophomore forward Briauna Taylor. Sophomore center Jessica Trambley scored eight first half points. The Lakers hit just 35.5 percent from the floor in the opening half, but limited ODU to just 26.1 percent (6-for-23) from the floor.

 

Ohio Dominican cut the Lakers' six point halftime lead to four (37-33) on a three-pointer at the 17:20 mark. However, Briauna Taylor tallied a 3-point play, followed by a three-pointer from junior guard Jasmine Padin. Sophomore guard Lauren Stodola chipped in a bucket and Trambley followed with four points. Taylor and Padin closed the run with a pair of deuces. The Lakers built a pair of 27-point leads (65-38) on a Brittany Taylor basketball at the 6:41 mark and a Tori Klewicki-McNutt basket at the 5:52 mark. GVSU outscored Ohio Dominican 45-27 in the second half, shooting 61.3 percent (19-for-31) from the floor in the final 20 minutes.

 

Briauna Taylor notched her second straight double-double, and third of her career, with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor added five steals on the night. Trambley chipped in with a season-high 14 points, while freshman guard Dani Crandall added nine points and five rebounds. Padin recorded eight in the scoring column, as did sophomore forward Brittany Taylor. The GVSU bench outscored ODU 35-15 and the Lakers held a 44-10 advantage in points in the paint. Grand Valley State hit 48.4 percent of its shots from the floor (30-for-62) and outrebounded the Panthers 46-29.
