The #10 Grand Valley State women's soccer team finished the 2010 regular season 15-1-2 overall, 12-1-2 in GLIAC action with a 6-0 win over Ferris State on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 30). The Lakers recorded their 14th shutout this season and the tough GVSU defense has not allowed a goal at home this year. Grand Valley State returns to action on Friday (Nov. 5) in the second round of the GLIAC Tournament.
The Lakers got on the scoreboard earlier when teammates Jaleen Dingledine and Alyssa Mira set up sophomore forward Kayla Addison at the 2:15 mark. Addison received the then dribbled passed defenders and beat the FSU keeper, knocking the ball in the back of the net. GVSU added its second goal of the game during the 24th minute after Addison returned the favor to Dingledine. Addison crossed the ball over to the middle, where Dingledine recorded her 10th goal of the year, giving Grand Valley State the 2-0 lead.
GVSU added its thrid goal in the first half from freshman Taylor Callen at the 34:01 mark. Callen rebounded a blocked shot taken from Mira then took a shot from 11 yards out, giving the Lakers a 3-0 lead at half.
During the second half of play, Addison recorded her second goal of the match and her team-high 16th of the year after teammate Erin Mruz found Addison in the middle of the field. Addison took a shot from 12 yards out, placing the ball in the net.
At 66:10, Callen notched her second goal of the game when she took a shot from 18 yards out placing the ball in the upper left corner of the net. Just four minutes later, sophomore Ashley Botts recorded her eighth goal of the year when Dingledine crossed the ball over from the left. Botts took a shot over the keeper's head, giving Grand Valley State a 6-0 win.
GVSU dominated offensively, outshooting Ferris State 24-7, including a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Lakers also took 10 corner kicks, while the Bulldogs were held to zero. Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise recorded her 10th shutout win and notched four saves in the match.
The Lakers also honored the 2010 senior class of Jaleen Dingledine, Erika Pitroff, Jenna Wenglinski, Kristen Eible and Kylee Merino. These five Lakers over the past four years have notched an impressive record of 79-3-7 (.927), becoming the most successful senior class in the history of GVSU soccer.
Grand Valley State captured the 2010 regular season GLIAC title and as the No. 1 seed, the Lakers will host the GLIAC Championship next week. The semifinals of the tournament will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 5), with the championship game on Sunday (Nov. 7) at 1:00 p.m.
