Final Stats

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State used goals from four players and another strong defensive effort to post a 6-0 victory over visiting Ohio Dominican on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3). The Lakers began their five-game homestand by outshooting ODU by a 27-7 count and improving to 9-1-1 on the season.

GVSU, ranked sixth in the country, is 9-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in GLIAC play, while Ohio Dominican falls to 6-2-2 on the year, 4-2-2 in the conference. The six goals by the Lakers marks their second-highest scoring output of the season, as Grand Valley State defeated Lake Erie by a 7-0 score at home on Sept. 24. Since falling to Northern Michigan on Sept. 19, the Lakers have won their last four matches by a combined score of 19-0.

Getting on the board first for Grand Valley State was sophomore Kayla Addison, who notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Erin Hilbert. Addison was inside the box from about 10 yards out and deposited her shot in the top left corner of the net at the 17:09 mark, putting the Lakers up, 1-0. GVSU upped the score to 2-0 at 21:32 when junior Erin Mruz took a cross from sophomore Alyssa Mira and put her shot in from point blank range.

The Lakers outshot Ohio Dominican in the first half, 13-2, with six of the 13 attempts being placed on goal. GVSU took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but would get back on the scoreboard early in the second half. Mruz scored her second goal of the day at 47:01 on a pair of nice passes from seniors Jaleen Dingledine and Kristen Eible. The goal started when Eible found Dingledine with a great pass, who then used a nifty pass of her own to find Mruz right in front of the net. Mruz easily scored to put the Lakers ahead 3-0 on her fifth goal of the season.

At the 64:42 mark of the second half, Dingledine started another GVSU goal, as she found sophomore Maria Brown on a deep cross that Brown tapped over to sophomore Erin Hilbert. Hilbert scored her fourth goal of the season by placing the ball in the bottom left corner to make the score, 4-0. Nearly 10 minutes later at 74:22, senior Erika Pitroff fired a shot from roughly 12 yards out that found the top left portion of the net for her third goal of the season. Brown earned her second assist of the game on Pitroff's strong shot. The final scoring came at the 88:16 mark, as GVSU scored when Ohio Dominican deflected the ball into their own net for an own goal. That concluded the scoring at 6-0.

Grand Valley State outshot the visitors 27-7, which included a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Chelsea Parise earned her ninth win and sixth shutout of the season by stopping four Panther shots. The Lakers led in corner kicks by a 4-1 margin.

GVSU returns to action on Friday (Oct. 8) when the Lakers welcome Northwood to town. The teams square off in a 4:00 p.m. GLIAC contest.
