Grand Valley State claimed a 26-10 victory over Indianapolis before a crowd of 4,803 at Key Stadium Saturday (Sept. 5) night. GVSU improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC action, while Indianapolis falls to 1-1 and 0-1. GVSU will host Saginaw Valley State next Saturday (Sept. 12) at 7 p.m. in the home opener.
The Lakers drove 64 yards in eight plays for a TD on its opening possession. Senior QB Brad Iciek found junior TE Andrew Lorman wide open in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown pass that covered nine yards. Justin Trumble missed the PAT and the Lakers led 6-0. Indianapolis answered with a 74-yard screen pass for a TD on third down and with the PAT led 7-6. The Lakers drove deep in Indianapolis territory twice, but failed to convert on two fourth down plays. GVSU drove deep in Greyhound territory for a fourth time and came away with a Trumble 22-yard field goal to give the Lakers a 9-7 lead.
"We came out on the first possession and were crisp, but then we lost our focus and made way to many mistakes on our next three drives," said GVSU head coach Chuck Martin. "We had too many dropped passes and mental errors."
The Lakers regained their focus on its final two possessions of the first half. Iciek directed a 5-play, 42-yard drive that concluded with an eight-yard scamper by P.T. Gates. The GVSU defense forced a three and out, followed by 3-play, 48-yard drive that took just :25 seconds. The entire drive consisted of three passes to WR Mike Koster, the final one covering five yards with 51 seconds left in the half. The Lakers held a 19:56-10:04 advantage in time off possession in the first half and outgained the Greyhounds 321-126.
The Laker defense forced a Greyhound turnover late in the third quarter when DL Nick Lawrence forced a fumble that FS Matt Bakker recovered. Junior RB James Berezik moved the ball inside the Indianapolis 10 with a 37 yard run and Trumble hit a 30-yard field goal for the Lakers' only points of the second half. Indianapolis added a late field goal for the final margin.
Berezik led the rushing attack with 101 yards on 20 carries, while Gates added 83 yards on 12 carries. Iciek completed 19-of-36 passes for 240 yards and two TDs, while Koster led the receiving corps with five catches for 68 yards.
