Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday at Wayne State, winning game one, 7-5, before dropping game two by an 8-4 margin. GVSU will close the regular season Sunday with a single nine-inning affair at Wayne State beginning at 12 noon.
GVSU scored a single run in the top of the first when Ben Knuth singled home Kyle Gendron who singled earlier in the inning. However, Wayne State scored three runs in the bottom of the first on four hits off GVSU starter Danny Richard. Richard left without retiring a batter, but junior Jared Knuth came in and held the Warriors at bay. Knuth yielded six hits and two runs in 5.2 innigs. Freshman Cory Rademacher picked up the win when he got the final out in the bottom of the sixth.
The Lakers started their comeback with one run in the top of the second on two hits, and then added two more runs with two outs in the fifth on a Josh Hillyard double to center. GVSU added another run with two outs in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Cory Maguire reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. B. Knuth then singled home Maguire with the equalizer. Hillyard opened the sevnth with a single and moved to second when Dan Anstedt was hit by a pitch. Matt Nickels sacraficed Hillyard and Anstedt up a base and Hillyard scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. Anstedt scored later on a bunt by Brad Raj. David Bowman picked up the save by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Wayne State scored five runs in the bottom of the third off starter and loser Joe Jablonski. GVSU scored three in the top of the fourth to make it interesting, but WSU scored two in the bottom half of the frame to take a 7-3 lead. Scott Cain was the only Laker with multiple hits (2-3).
