Grand Valley State took on Saginaw Valley State in a double-header at the SVSU Sports Complex on Thursday. The No. 1 Lakers won game one 7-6, while game two was suspended with the score tied at 4-4 in the top of the 11th inning.
In game two, the Lakers have scored four runs on 13 hits. Freshman Cory Rademacher entered the game in the bottom of the 10th inning and was on the mound when the game was suspended. The game will be made up when Saginaw Valley State visits Grand Valley State on April 25.
In game one, senior Matt Cade earned the win to move to 4-0 on the season. Cade entered teh game in the third inning and shut the Cardinals down for the remainder of the contest, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six. As a team, the Lakers scored seven runs on seven hits and did not commit an error. At the plate, freshman Steve Anderson led GVSU, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs batted in and another run scored.
Saginaw Valley State jumped on starter Brad Raj, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and another two in the bottom of the second. In between, the Lakers evened out the game with three runs in the top half of the second. To lead off the top of the second, Junior Cory Maguire led off with a walk and senior Ben Knuth followed that up with one of his own. Senior Casey Robrahn doubled to right field to score both of them, and then Anderson scored later in the inning when he went home after senior Matt Nickels stole second.
Grand Valley State tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Bobby Walmsley walked with one out and eventually scored on a passed ball. Later, freshman Cody Grice singled to left field to send home Nickels, who reached on an error earlier in the frame.
After SVSU put up another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, GVSU tied it in the top of the fifth. Knuth and Robrahn both walked and then Anderson singled up the middle to make the score 6-6. The final run of the game came in the top of the seventh inning and put the Lakers ahead 7-6. Maguire led off with a double to center field and then went home on a two-out single up the middle by Anderson.
