Box Score
MIDLAND, Mich. -
Starting pitchers Andre Benjamin and Kyle Schepel threw 12.2 innings and allowed no earned runs as Grand Valley State split a doubleheader with Northwood on Wednesday. Junior Kyle Gendron also tied the GVSU single-season record with his 18th double in game two.
The Lakers (36-12-1, 18-10-1 GLIAC) took the first game 2-0 before dropping a 2-1 decision in the second match. Gendron paced GVSU at the plate, going 3-for-7 with two RBI. Benjamin earned the win in game one to advance his record to 8-1 on the year.
In the opener, Benjamin threw 6.2 innings and gave up just five hits and no runs while striking out two. Senior David Bowman got the final out for the Lakers' first save of the season. At the dish, the Lakers scored two runs on seven hits. Freshman Cody Grice went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Neither team scored until the fifth inning, when Grand Valley State put two on the scoreboard. Grice accounted for the first run when his single to left field scored senior Josh Hillyard, and then Gendron's single to right field later in the frame plated Grice for the final score of 2-0.
Schepel went all six innings in the nightcap, giving up five hits and two unearned runs with three strikeouts. The Lakers scored a lone run on five hits, led by sophomore Torre Aguirre, who went 2-for-3.
GVSU scored the first runs once again, as Gendron doubled down the left-field line in the top of the first inning to score Grice for a 1-0 Laker advantage. That was the only time that the Lakers touched home plate, and two Timberwolf runs in the bottom of the third inning sealed the game at 2-1.
