GVSU Earns GLIAC Doubleheader Split at Tiffin

April 19, 2009

Box Score

Tiffin, Ohio - Grand Valley State dropped a 1-0, 10-inning battle to Tiffin in the opening game on Sunday afternoon (April 19) before totaling a split of the twinbill with a 5-0 shutout victory in the nightcap. After six straight road games, the Lakers return to Allendale to play a pair of doubleheaders next weekend.

The split places GVSU at 31-16 overall with an 11-11 record in GLIAC play, while Tiffin is now 20-18 with a 7-13 league mark. The Dragons stifled Grand Valley State in the opener, as the Lakers were only able to manage one base hit.

Senior pitcher Lori Andjelich was the hard-luck loser, as she allowed just four base hits and the one unearned run, which was scored, in part, due to the international tiebreaker rule. Tiffin recorded a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to squeak by with the 1-0 win. Andjelich walked four batters and struck out seven and is now 17-8 on the year. Senior shortstop Nichole Woityra had the Lakers' only base hit, a two-out single in the top of the sixth inning.

Game two saw the offense push five runs across the plate, as Grand Valley State notched seven hits, all single-base hits. Freshman Carli Raisutis used a two-run single in the bottom of the first frame to score Tina Briggs and Woityra. Briggs led off the inning with a single, while Woityra reached on an error. Later in the inning, third baseman Becky Rudenga's RBI single scored Raisutis for a 3-0 Laker lead.

Woityra added a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth inning and Karen Walters tallied a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to make the score 5-0, the final tally of the game. Raisutis and Rudenga both went 2-for-4 in game two, while Briggs, Woityra, and Becky Gill all had a base hit and scored a run.

Junior Lauren Rohan earned the win, pitching 4.1 innings of four-hit ball. She walked one batter and struck out three Dragons. Freshman Andrea Nicholson pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing just one base hit, one walk, and striking out two. Rohan is now 9-7 on the year.

Grand Valley State hosts Wayne State in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The twinbill will begin at 2:00 p.m.
