Lakers Split GLIAC Twinbill With Tiffin

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with Tiffin. GVSU won game one by a 9-1 margin, but dropped game two by a 12-3 score. GVSU (32-6-1; 16-3-1) will host Wayne State Wednesday at 2 p.m. in a GLIAC twinbill.

Freshman pitcher Kyle Schepel improved to 3-0 on the year with a three-hit, complete-game victory in game one. Schepel struck out three in the first complete game of his career. Tiffin scored first in the top of the second when CF Ty Blake was hit by a pitch advanced to second on a ground out and then scored on a single to center. GVSU got on the board with five runs in the bottom of the third on four hits and one Tiffin error. After LF Matt Nickels was retired for the first out of the inning, RF Cody Grice was hit by a pitch, 3B Josh Hillyard singled and 2B Kyle Gendron loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. 1B Cory Maguire hit a sacrafice fly to left to score Grice, followed by single from DH Ben Knuth that scored Hillyard. CF Casey Robrahn walked to load the bases again and SS Steve Anderson singled to left to plate a pair of runs. Robrahn scored on a throwing error for the Lakers' fifth run of the inning.

GVSU added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. Nickels singled and stole second before eventually scoring on a throwing error by the Dragons' second baseman. Gendron reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Maguire then plated Gendron with a single to right. GVSU added two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Gendron walked and moved to third on a double by Maguire. PH Torre Aguirre then delivered a 2-run single that scored Gendron and Maguire.

Maguire and Anderson each collected a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while Aguirre was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. C Bobby Walmsley and Knuth each tallied a pair of hits.

Game two was filled with errors and bloopers by the Lakers. Tiffin scored 12 runs on 15 hits and five Laker errors, while GVSU managed just three runs on nine hits. Tiffin scored four runs in the top of the first off starter and loser Joe Jablonski with two outs and no one on base. GVSU scored in the bottom of the first when RF Cody Grice singled, stole second and scored on a Knuth single. Tiffin added five runs on three hits and two GVSU errors in the top of the fourth and put the game out of reach in sixth with three more runs. SS Dan Anstedt hit a two-run HR for the Lakers in the bottom of the fifth. Jablonski yielded eight runs on eight hits in 3.0 innings of work and was tagged with the loss. Tiffin's Donnie Smith improved to 3-3 on the year with the complete-game win.
