Final Stats
Clermont, Fla. -
GVSU was unable to score a run for the second straight game, falling to West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 7) in Clermont, Fla. The Lakers played just once, as they prepare for a tripleheader on Sunday to close out their spring trip at the NTC Spring Games.
Senior pitcher Lori Andjelich was the hard-luck loser on Saturday, as she pitched well enough to lead Grand Valley State (6-5) to a victory. Andjelich (3-3) allowed just two runs - both in the fifth inning - on five hits, while walking one batter. She totaled three strikeouts in seven innings, recording 14 flyball outs. For the season, Andjelich is toting a terrific 0.73 earned run average in 38.1 innings of work.
West Virginia Wesleyan (9-6) tallied a pair of runs off Andjelich in the fifth innings, after four scoreless innings of play. With Stephanie Wheeler on second base and two out, Lexi Rodgers doubled to right center field, driving in the first run. Shelby Carlson followed with an RBI single down the left field line. WVW recorded another double following Carlson's single, but Andjelich got out of the inning without any further damage.
The Lakers' best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Leftfielder Karen Walters singled up the middle off WVW starter Patricia Moreno to start the frame. Two batters later, pinch hitter Becky Gill delivered a single to left field, pushing Walters to second with one out. However, Moreno pitched out of the jam, retiring the next two GVSU batters to close out the inning.
For West Virginia Wesleyan, Moreno (3-2) pitched very well. She allowed just the two base hits in seven innings and struck out four Lakers. No player in the game for either team had more than one base hit.
Grand Valley State closes the trip with a tripleheader on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 8). The Lakers start the day against Assumption at 1:00 p.m., followed by a 3:00 p.m. game versus Bentley. GVSU will conclude its 14-game trip with a 7:00 p.m. nightcap with Hannibal-Lagrange.
