Lakers Fall 86-83 In Overtime At Hillsdale

Hillsdale, Mich. - Hillsdale College scored at the buzzer in regulation to tie the game and then outscored Grand Valley State 11-8 in the extra session to claim an 86-83 overtime win at Hillsdale Saturday afternoon. GVSU falls to 15-6 overall and 10-6 in GLIAC action, while Hillsdale moves to 11-9 overall and 9-7 in GLIAC action. GVSU will return home to square off against Northern Michigan Thursday (Feb 12) at 8 p.m.

Grand Valley State led by as many as 10 points (27-17) in the first half, but Hillsdale used a 13-5 run over the final 5:21 to cut the Laker lead to two (32-20) at the half. Bobby Tiernan's layup at the 8:43 mark of the second half gave GVSU a 60-52 lead, but the Charges scored eight straight points to tie the game 60-60 with 6:12 left. Hillsdale led 73-70 when sophomore forward Justin Ringler scored a layup with :21 ticks left. Hillsdale turned the ball over with 19 seconds left and Justin Ringler converted a three-point play to give GVSU a 75-73 lead. Hillsdale's Tyler Gerber missed his first attempt to tie the game with :05 left, but tied the game with a bucket at the buzzer.

Senior forward Pete Trammell tied the game for the 10th time (80-80) with a pair from the charity stripe with 1:40 left in overtime, but Hillsdale's Luke Laser put the Chargers up 84-81 with a three-pointer. Sophomore forward Toreau Brown pulled the Lakers to within one (84-83) with a bucket in the paint. The Lakers had one last chance as Pete Trammell pulled down a rebound from a missed HC three-pointer. Trammell missed a jumper with :04 left and Hillsdale made two free throws to seal the win.

Pete Trammell led the way for the Lakers with 22 points and three assists. Trammell hit 7-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from the three-point line. Toreau Brown added 21 points and eight rebounds, while Justin Ringler chipped in 15 points. Freshman guard Wes Trammell added nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from the three-point line. GVSU hit 28-of-30 from the charity stripe and 7-of-12 from the three-point line.
