Senior forward Pete Trammell tallied a game-high 22 points to lead Grand Valley State to 73-65 road win over Northwood Saturday (Feb. 28). GVSU improves to 19-8 overall and 14-8 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will host Ferris State Tuesday (March 3) at 8 p.m. in a GLIAC Tournament first-round game.
Northwood built a 20-14 advantage at the 10:46 mark of the first-half and led 22-17 before Grand Valley State went on a 16-0 run over a span of 6:38. Pete Trammell hit a pair from the charity stripe to start the run, then drilled a three-pointer. Sophomore Mike Przydzial followed with a three-point play and bucket in the paint, while Pete Trammell added a short jumper. Senior center Bobby Tiernan finished the run with a layup. Pete Trammell tallied nine points in the run, while Przydzial added five and Tiernan two. Freshman guard Wes Trammell gave the Lakers a 40-29 lead with 1:11 left in the first half, but a Northwood bucket with five seconds left cut the Laker lead to 40-31 at the half.
The Lakers opened the second half with a Nick West free throw and two Alvin Storrs' layups to up their lead to 45-31. The Timberwolves clawed their way back into the game and a three-pointer by Antonio Harrison with 10:32 remaining cut the Laker lead to three (48-45). Sophomore forward Toreau Brown answered with a bucket in the paint, while senior guard Jerret Smith and Tiernan hit layups to give GVSU a 54-46 lead with 8:09 left. The Laker defense dug in and held Northwood to a free throw for during a five minute span and Pete Trammell's three-pointer at the 5:36 mark gave the Lakers a 59-49 lead. Grand Valley State converted 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in the closing minutes to secure the win.
Pete Trammell led GVSU with 22 points and three assists, while freshman Wes Trammell added nine points. Toreau Brown chipped in nine points and Bobby Tiernan eight. The Lakers hit 24-of-49 from the floor (49.0 percent), 4-of-5 from the three-point line and 21-of-29 (72.4 percent) from the charity stripe. GVSU held a 38-28 rebounding advantage and outscored Northwood 34-20 in the paint. The Laker bench held a 31-19 scoring advantage.
