Senior forward Pete Trammell notched his third consecutive game with at least 20 points, scoring 22 in a loss to Wayne State on Thursday. The Lakers led by as much as 17 in the second half before falling to the Warriors by the final score of 63-60.
Trammell shot 50.0 percent (6-12) from the field and 60.0 percent (3-5) from long range. He was also a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. He also added four rebounds in 35 minutes of action. As a team, the Lakers (18-8, 13-8 GLIAC) shot 39.2 percent from the floor, while the Warriors (11-14, 9-12 GLIAC) hit at a 42.3 clip and shot better than 40 percent from long range.
A three-pointer from Trammell 2:25 into the game was the first field goal of the contest and it gave Grand Valley State a 4-2 lead. Wayne State rattled off the next seven points, capped off by a fast-break dunk by Bryan Edwards, to put the Warriors ahead 9-4 with just more than 14 minutes remaining in the first half.
GVSU rallied and tied the game at 17-17 on two free throws by Trammell 11:01 into the game before taking the lead on three more Trammell free throws 29 seconds after that. Trammell hit another two free throws to make the score 22-17. with 7:14 remaining in the half. The teams traded the lead until a three-pointer by Trammell closed the first half with the Lakers holding a 33-29 edge.
The second half started the same way the first half ended; Trammell hit a shot, extending the Laker lead to 35-29. After Jerry Oden made a layup to bring WSU to within five at 38-33, Grand Valley State went on a seven-point run that finished witha Toreau Brown jumper to make the score 45-33 with 13:07 left in the game. Brown finished the game with 10 points and three rebounds.
Wayne State's Larry Edwards hit a three-pointer to make the score 45-36 and then it was Grand Valley State going on a run once again. The Lakers went on a 10-2 rally to go up 55-38, their biggest lead of the day. The Warriors battled back and scored the next 11 points to cut the lead to six points with 5:17 left in the contest. After a tip-in by Bobby Tiernan, the Lakers led by seven points, 60-53, with 2:14 remaining in the game. The Warriors held them scoreless down the stretch and Bryan Edwards hit the eventual game-winner with 14 seconds remaining for a 63-60 Wayne State win.
