GVSU Fall To Lake Superior State, 80-70

Allendale, Mich. - Lake Superior State shot the lights out of the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena Thursday night en route to an 80-70 victory over Grand Valley State. LSSU improves to 18-6 overall and 15-4 in GLIAC action, while Grand Valley State falls to 17-8 and 12-7. GVSU will host Saginaw Valley State Saturday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

Lake Superior State jumped out to an 21-3 six minutes into the contest, make four three-pointers. GVSU battled back and pulled to within one (27-26) with a 23-6 run. Pete Trammell gave the GVSU the lead (34-33) with a jumper in the paint and then hit a three-pointer to up the Grand Valley State lead to four (37-33). LSSU ended the half with a jumper and a three at the buzzer to take a 3-37 lead into the lockerroom.

Grand Valley State opened the second half with a three-pointer from Pete Trammell, a layup from Justin Ringler and a three-pointer by Wes Trammell to give GVSU its largest lead of the game (45-38). Grand Valley State led 52-45 with 13:03 left when Lake Superior State went on an 8-0 run to take a 53-52 lead. Pete Trammell's three-pointer at the 7:47 mark gave GVSU another lead (58-55), but a five point LSSU possession with a made three-pointer and a GVSU foul after the basket put Lake Superior State back in front (60-58). Toreau Brown tied the game at 60-60, but LSSU went on a 12-2 run and took a 72-62 lead on a three-pointer by Scott Perkins with 2:51 left. Lake Superior State was 6-6 from the free throw line in closing minute to seal the win.

Lake Superior State shot 52.1 percent from the floor (25-48), 62.5 percent from the three-point line (15-24) and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe (15-17). In addition, LSSU outrebounded GVSU 30-24 and dished out 21 assists on 25 made baskets. Seven different LSSU players hit a three-pointer. Tim VanOudheusden led four LSSU players in double figures with 24 points. Pete Trammell was the only Laker in double figures with 22 points, while Wes Trammell added nine. GVSU connected on 47.9 percent from the floor (23-48), 61.5 percent from the charity stripe (8-13) and 72.7 percent from the free throw line (16-22). GVSU outscored LSSU 26-12 in the paint adn 25-17 off turnovers, but Lake Superior State's hot shooting from the floor was too much overcome.
