Laker Men Race Out To Big Lead At Calvin Winter Invitational With 147 Points

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's swimming & diving team jumped out to a day one lead at the Calvin Winter Invitational Thursday evening. GVSU tallied a day one total of 147 points, followed by Kalamazoo College in second (85) and Valparaiso in third (44). GVSU will continue action Friday and Saturday at the Calvin Winter Invitational.

GVSU's Jeff Pauza opened with a record-setting swim in the 1650 freestyle. Pauza finished first in a pool-record and NCAA DII "B" cut time of 16:08.99. Pauza's time bettered the previous pool record time of 16:11.70 set by Wayne State's Oskar Nordstrand earlier this season. The Lakers' David Hayhow, who also hit the "B" cut with his second-place finish in a time of 16:15.93, followed in second. Grand Valley State's Mike Cruce was third (16:34.49) and Ryan Kraai completed the 1-2-3-4 sweep with his fourth-place finish in a time of 16:51.32. GVSU Jim Hinkson touched in sixth 16:57.60. GVSU 800 A free relay team of Jordan Schrotenboer, Jon Bardsley, Derek Mead and Aaron Beebe hit the DII "A" cut with a second-place finish (6:44.57), while the Lakers' "B' relay team of Kurt VonEhr, Sam Soukup, Ryan Gerber and Joe Sayre was third in a time of 6:55.00.
