Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State claimed its third consecutive GLIAC Tournament Title with a win over Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Nov. 8) evening. After a 1-1 tie through regulation, GVSU recorded three penalties kicks, while Saginaw Valley State was unable to knocked one in during the shootout. The Lakers will play in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Semifinals on Sunday, Nov. 15.

After a physical scoreless first half, SVSU got on the scoreboard first during the 46th minute. Kristen Tomczyk headed a ball through the left side of the net off a Charley Porter corner kick, giving Saginaw Valley State a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later at 48:14, the Lakers added a goal of their own, when Katie Johnson took a shot from the right side of the field. The ball was blocked by a Cardinal defender, but landed in the lower left corner of the net, leading to a 1-1 tie. Both Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State were unable to score during the 90 minute match and two overtime periods.

At the end of regulation a 1-1 tie would be decided by a shootout. Grand Valley State freshman Kayla Addison took the first shot where she placed it in the back of the net. SVSU missed its first penalty kick when goalkeeper Chelsea Parise saved the goal. Sophomore Erin Mruz made her attempt and Parise denied the Cardinals once again on their second attempt. Kristen Eible made her penalty shot, which forced SVSU to make its last penalty shot, which ended up wide. GVSU claimed the victory on a 3-0 advantage on penalty kicks.

In the 110 minutes of action Grand Valley State outshot the Cardinals by a 21-10 margin, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Parise recorded four saves in the match, and save two penalty shots during the shootout.
