In its opening match at the GLIAC-GLVC Crossover Tournament in Lansing, Mich. on Friday (Oct. 16), Rockhurst topped Grand Valley State, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 27-25). After winning the opening set, GVSU could not hold off the Hawks in the final three sets of the match despite posting three players with at least 10 kills. The Lakers will play again at 6:30 p.m. against #13 Lewis.
GVSU outhit Rockhurst .245 to .223, while recording 11 more kills (67-56). Defensively, RU notched 83 digs to the Lakers' 71, but Grand Valley State recorded 13 total blocks to just six for the Hawks.
The opening set was tied 13 times with five lead changes. GVSU led 15-11 before Rockhurst rallied back to tie the score at 18-18. The teams were again tied at 23-23 before the Lakers received consecutive kills from junior Rebeccah Rapin and senior Kaity Gormley to end the set, 25-23.
Similar to the first set, the teams were again tied at 23-23 in the second stanza. The second set was tied 10 different times and featured five lead changes in a back-and-forth contest. However, Grand Valley State recorded a service error and an attack error to fall by the same score (25-23) in which it had won the first set.
Rockhurst stayed comfortably ahead of GVSU in the third frame, leading 20-14 before the Lakers responded and cut the score to 22-20 off of back-to-back kills from sophomore Nicole Whiddon and junior Krysta Kornack. The Hawks then answered back with three of the next four points for a 25-21 win.
Grand Valley State led 14-9 in the fourth set and 17-13 before Rockhurst slowly creeped back into the set. The score was 22-19 in GVSU's favor before the Hawks notched four of the next five points to jump ahead, 24-23. Grand Valley State tied the score at 24-24 and 25-25 before Rockhurst used a kill and a Laker attack error to finish off the set and match with a 27-25 victory.
The Lakers had a pair of players record 17 kills, which was a match-high. Rapin secured 17 kills with just one attack error for a .471 attack percentage. She also added five block assists and four digs. Senior Whitney Tremain added a double-double with 17 kills, 14 digs, and three block assists.
Whiddon played very well, as she tallied 12 kills, a .357 hitting percentage, and five total blocks (one solo). Defensively, junior Janelle Beaudry totaled a team-high 20 digs and five assists. Junior Meghan Scanlon (27 assists, two service aces) and freshman Olivia Kohler (23 assists, nine digs) controlled the offense. Freshman Eno Umoh supplied seven kills and a match-best six blocks (two solo).
