Laker Men Claim 64-56 Win At Northern Michigan

Marquette, Mich. - Grand Valley State converted eight free throws in the final two minutes Saturday afternoon at Northern Michigan and went on to claim at 64-56 GLIAC road victory. GVSU improves to 15-4 overall and 10-4 in GLIAC action, while NMU falls to 9-10 overall and 4-10 in league action. The Lakers will be at top-ranked Findlay Thursday (Feb. 5).

Sophomore forward Toreau Brown got the Lakers off to a strong start with three-point play a minute into the contest. Freshman guard Wes Trammell followed with a 3-pointer and the Lakers were off an running. Leading 10-7, the Lakers went on a 15-4 run to build a 25-11 lead with 3:02 remaining in the first half. Sophomore forward Mike Przydzial started the run with a jumper in the paint and then added a pair of free throws. Senior Pete Trammell drilled a three, while Wes Trammell and Brown hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Lakers a 23-11 lead. Freshman center Nick West finished the run with a pair of free throws. However, Norther Michigan regrouped and finished the half with a 14-2 run of its own to pull within two (27-25) after 20 minutes of action.

The Wildcats took their first lead of the game (34-33) on a Kyle Greene layup at the 15:40 mark, but sophomore center Anthony Ianni answered quickly with a layup. Trailing 42-40, the Lakers' Mike Przydzial hit six straight from the charity stripe to give Grand Valley State a 46-42 lead. The Wildcats' Raymont McElroy hit a 3-pointer to pull NMU back to within one (46-45), but Pete Trammell hit a three, followed by back-to-back jumpers from West and Brown to up the Laker lead to eight (53-45). Northern Michigan clawed its way back in the game and pulled to within two (58-56) on a Marc Renelique layup with :39 seconds left. Senior guard Jerret Smith and Pete Trammell each hit three free throws in the final :29 seconds to preserve the win.

Toreau Brown led GVSU with 14 points and nine reboudns, while Mike Przydzial added 12 points and six rebounds. Przydzial was 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Pete Trammell scored 12 points and pulled down six caroms, while Nick West scored 10 points and blocked three shots. GVSU outrebounded NMU 39-28 and converted 31-of-45 free throws. The Lakes held the Wildcats to just 35 percent shooting from the floor (21-for-60).
