Freshman guard Wes Trammell (Jenison, Mich.) scored a career-high 18 points to help Grand Valley State defeat Michigan Tech 79-77 at the SDC Gym on Thursday night. Trammell shot 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range in the winning effort.
The Lakers (14-4, 9-4 GLIAC) shot 53.3 percent from the field, including a scorching 58.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Wes's brother Pete Trammell added 17 points while sophomore Justin Ringler chipped in with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Robby Springborn led the Huskies (9-9, 6-7 GLIAC) with 18 points, but missed a game-winning three at the buzzer.
Wes Trammell scored the first basket for the Lakers, hitting an early trey to put his team up 3-1 at the 19:15 mark of the first half. His second three-pointer came 1:49 later and made the score 7-5 in favor of GVSU. Pete and Wes then made back-to-back three-pointers to put Grand Valley State up 13-7 with 15:20 left in the half. The three by Wes started an 11-0 run by Grand Valley State that Ringler capped off with a layup at the 13:07 mark to put GVSU ahead by 11 points, 21-10.
Senior guard Jerret Smith gave the Lakers a 10-point lead with 8:32 remaining in the half with a jumper that made the score 29-19. Sophomore Mike Przydzial made a layup of his own with 2:50 left in the half to make it an 11-point, 37-26. The Huskies battled back, but Wes Trammell hit a jumper at the buzzer to send the teams into halftime with the score 41-34 in favor of the Lakers.
GVSU jumped back out to a 10-point lead in the second half when Wes Trammell hit a jumper 1:02 into the stanza to make the score 45-35. A layup by Chris Baugh completed a MTU run and brought the Huskies to within one point at 60-59 with 8:49 left in the game. The first tie of the game came with just 3:36 remaining. Down three points, Sean Geary drilled a three-pointer to deadlock the teams at 70-70.
Pete Trammell hit a long shot of his own followed by a traditional three-point play by Fedrick Bowe to keep the teams tied with 2:49 left in the game. Toreau Brown scored four straight points on a layup and two free throws to give Grand Valley State a four-point, 77-73 lead with 1:29 remaining. Brown added the game-winning basket with 53 seconds left, tipping in his own miss to put GVSU up 79-75. Mike Hojnacki made two free throws with 41 seconds left, but those were the final points of the game, giving Grand Valley State a 79-77 win.
The Lakers continue their Upper Peninsula road trip with a game against Northern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 31 in Marquette, Mich. Tip-off for that game is slated for 3 p.m.
