#1 Lakers Score in Last Minute to Beat UMSL 1-0

Sept. 7, 2008

Box Score

St. Charles, Mo. - Grand Valley State didn't score for the first 89:51 of the match, but still picked up a 1-0 win against Missouri-St. Louis. Irie Dennis notched her third game-winning goal of the season with just 8.9 seconds remaining to propel the No. 1 Lakers to the victory. Kristina Nasturzio did not allow a goal and extended her shutout streak to 334:51 to start the season.

GVSU outshot the Tritons by a 6-2 margin in the first half. Nasturzio stopped UMSL's only shot on goal in the first half, while Tritons' goalkeeper Mary Behrmann recorded two in the first half. There were very few fouls in the first half; the Lakers were whistled for four, while UMSL committed just one.

Grand Valley State's defense was even better in the second half, as they prevented the Tritons from putting a single shot on goal. The Lakers, on the other hand, took five. But neither team was able to score until the final shot of the game. Katy Tafler controlled the ball inside the Tritons' 18-yard box and found a wide-open Dennis, who put the ball in the back of the net with just 8.9 seconds remaining.

That lead held up, and the Lakers recorded a 1-0 win. Ashley Elsass took three shots and put two on goal, the only player in the game to put multiple shots on frame. Nasturzio has not allowed a goal in 334:51 this season and has three shutouts in four games. The Lakers, as a team, have not allowed a goal in 360 minutes and have outscored opponents 9-0 through the first four matches.

GVSU (4-0-0) will retake the field Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Saint Joseph's (Ind.)
