#9 Grand Valley State rolled past Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., as 11 different players tallied a kill for GVSU. The Lakers topped LSSU, 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20), for their 11th straight victory. GVSU improves to 14-2 overall, with a perfect 7-0 GLIAC mark. Lake Superior State drops to 3-8 overall, 2-5 in league play.
GVSU has not dropped a match since a 3-2 loss to #15 Augustana on Sept. 5. Of the 11 straight wins, the Lakers have accumulated six of the 3-0 variety. Head coach Deanne Scanlon continues her dominance of LSSU, as she is 27-0 in her career against Lake Superior State.
The Lakers of Lake Superior State, however, came out strong early, jumping to an 8-5 lead in the opening set. After an attack error, GVSU gained possession of the ball and Jamie Ashmore brought the Lakers back and into the lead. 10 straight serves from the senior setter put Grand Valley State ahead, 15-8. Lake Superior State would get within five points at 15-10 before GVSU closed the set with a 10-5 run.
After opening the second set tied at 3-3, GVSU took control. The Lakers jumped out to a 10-4 lead and were ahead 22-9 late in the set. Grand Valley State had their most productive offensive set, hitting .333 with 14 kills and only four errors.
The third set saw Grand Valley State push out to an early 12-3 lead before LSSU put together its best set of the match. Lake Superior state closed the advantage to within five points on separate occasions before GVSU closed the set and match with a 25-20 victory.
For the match, Grand Valley State hit .274 with 38 kills. GVSU tallied 22 block assists for 12.0 total team blocks, while Lake Superior State managed just 1.0 total team block. Grand Valley State also held LSSU to a hitting percentage of -.010 with 22 attack errors.
11 different players recorded a kill for GVSU, led by sophomore Rebeccah Rapin, who followed a strong match at Saginaw Valley State on Friday with another on Saturday afternoon. Rapin totaled match-bests of nine kills and six block assists, while putting together a .450 hitting percentage.
Senior middle blocker Danielle Alexander added six kills and five block assists, while hitting .556 for the match. For the weekend, Alexander totaled 26 kills and just one attack error. Sophomore Janelle Beaudry had a team-best 12 digs, while Ashmore added 21 assists and eight digs.
The Lakers return home to GVSU Fieldhouse Arena next Friday (Oct. 3), as they take on Findlay at 7:00 p.m.
