Reber Powers #10 Lakers Past Wayne State 3-1

Detroit, Mich. - Grand Valley State University opened the conference season with a 3-1 win over Wayne State on Friday night. Lauren Reber had a match-high 20 kills to go with 17 digs to help the No. 10 Lakers down the Warriors 25-27, 25-19, 25-23 30-28 in a match that had two sets go to extra points. GVSU (8-2, 1-0 GLIAC) will take on Northwood tomorrow (Sat., Sept. 13) at 4 p.m.

The first match went back and forth until a service ace and two kills by Kaity Gormley put the Lakers up 23-19. Gormley finished the night with 11 kills and four block assists. The Warriors fought back and tied the match at 23-23 and then again at 25-25 before an attack error by GVSU and a WSU kill gave them the win. The Lakers hit .222 in the first set, tallying 15 kills to seven errors.

The second set was the only one that was not decided by two points. Two service aces by Danielle Alexander, along with two Laker blocks, put GVSU up 10-4 early in the match. Alexander put together an impressive stat line with 14 kills, five aces and five blocks in the match. Wayne State never got within three points from that time on, with the GVSU lead extending to seven at one point in a 25-19 win. A kill by Reber, assisted by Jamie Ashmore, ended the set.

In the third set, Wayne State jumped out to a 9-3 lead and the Lakers were forced to fight back. Down 16-13, an Alexander kill got GVSU kick-started and led to the set being tied at 16-16. Alexander's ace on the next serve gave the Lakers their first lead of the set. GVSU had set point at 24-22, and a kill by Rebeccah Rapin put the set away at 25-23. The kill was one of nine for Rapin, to go along with four blocks.

The Lakers fell down by four early in the fourth set, but a kill by Alexander, followed by three straight attacking errors by the Warriors put GVSU up 11-9. From there, the teams stayed within two points of each other all the way to the end of the match. The teams were tied from 25-25 all the way to 28-28 before kills from Reber and Gormley gave GVSU a 30-28 set win, to go with the match win.
