Grand Valley State University dropped a 6-3 decision to Ashland in its first game of the GLIAC Tournament. Elizabeth Smith batted in three runs, including her sixth home run of the season, in the losing effort. GVSU takes on Gannon in its second game of the tournament, which was postponed due to weather and will restart Saturday at 9 a.m.
Stephanie Cole (13-6) picked up the loss in the game, going 5.2 innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Ashland scored six runs while Cole was on the mound. Lori Andjelich pitched the last out of the game for Grand Valley State. Smith was stellar at the plate, going 2-2 with three runs batted in and another scored on her sixth home run. Nichole Woityra went 2-3 at the plate with one run scored. The Lakers scored three runs on six hits offensively.
GVSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Smith doubled to left-center field. The double scored Woityra, who had walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The Eagles tied the score at one in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run. The Lakers retook the lead on Smith's sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Karen Walters to make it 3-1 in favor of GVSU.
The 3-1 lead disappeared in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ashland scored five runs to go up 6-3, which ended up the final score. A sacrifice fly made the score 3-2 and a single tied the score. A three-run home run to right field put Ashland up 6-3.
After the game, the Lakers started to play Gannon before the game was delayed due to inclement weather. The game was going into the third inning with the score tied 1-1. Games will resume tomorrow, May 3, at 9 a.m.
