#24 GVSU Drops Close Decision to #25 Drury in NCAAs

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State University could not repeat its victory over Drury from earlier in the season, falling 5-2 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The #24 Lakers fell down 2-1 in doubles before battling back and making the match close right down to the wire. GVSU closes the season with a 26-6 record and a spot in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In doubles play, Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout picked up the lone GVSU point with an 8-2 victory. Audrey Koopsen and Jaime Oppenlander fell by the same margin at the number two spot, while Jenna Killips and Emily Zellner suffered a hard-fought 8-5 loss at number one doubles.

Four of the singles matches went the distance, while the remaining two did not, as Drury had claimed the five points needed to advance. Killips and Koopsen lost at first and second singles, respectively. Killips fell by a score of 6-1, 6-0, while Koopsen lost 6-0, 6-3. Katelyn Grashorn then won a three-set victory, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Panthers. Johnston was winning her match 6-2, 3-6, 3-2 at number three singles when it was called. Jackie Shipman was going into the third set of her match at the same time. Drury got the win when they took the number five singles point in an exciting two-set match. Trout lost the first set 6-3 and went down 5-2 in the second. She battled back, however, and tied the match at 6-6 before losing 7-6 (7-4).
