GVSU Takes Two From Gannon, 10-2 and 18-0

Allendale, Mich. - #9 Grand Valley State swept two more games from Gannon on Sunday, winning game one by a 10-2 score and game two 18-0. GVSU improves to 20-4 overall and 7-3 in GLIAC action. GVSU took all four games from Gannon over the weekend, outscoring the Knights 61-9 and outhitting GU 70-23. The Lakers recorded 19 doubles, three triples and five homeruns. The GVSU pitching staff notched an ERA of 0.96.

Game 1

CF Pat Radde led off the game with a single and later scored on a Casey Robrahn single to center. RF Derek Hinke doubled to open the third inning and scored on another Robrahn single to left. GVSU scored three runs on six hits in the fourth. LF Matt Nickels opened the inning with a solo HR to right. Josh Hillyard singled to third and then ended up on third after a throwing error. Hinke doubled to plate Hillyard and Robrahn doubled to score Hinke. The Lakers added five runs on four hits in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead. Brad Raj drove in two with a double, while Hinke hit a sacrifice fly to plate Radde who had earlier doubled. Gannon scored a single unearned runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Lakers scored 10 runs on 19 hits.

Andre Benjamin improved to 5-0 on the year, yielding four hits and no runs in five innings of work. Benjamin struck out four and walked one. Junior 1B Casey Robrahn went 4-4 with three RBIs, while RF Derek Hinke was 3-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. CF Pat Radde and 3B Eric Kruse each collected three hits. DH Brad Raj was 2-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Game 2

Grand Valley State scored six runs on five hits in the second. C Bobby Walmsley and Hinke each produced two-run doubles, while Robrahn added a two-run single. Walmsley walked in the fourth with one out and stole second and third. He then came home on a sacrifice fly by Nickels. The Lakers scored five runs on five hits in the fourth. Josh Hillyard opened the fourth inning with a single followed by a Hinke double to left. Robrahn drilled a two-run single to left. SS Justin Beal doubled to left to score Robrahn and Beal scored on a single to left by Kruse. Kruse later scored on an error. GVSU added two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. 1B Cory Maguire provided the big blow in the sixth with a grand slam over the batter's eye in center.

2B Josh Hillyard was 3-3 with three runs scored, while 1B Robrahn was 2-3 with four RBIs and 1B Maguire was 2-2 with four RBI. Combined, Robrahn and Maguire were 4-5 with eight RBIs at first base. SS Justin Beal was 3-5. GVSU notched 18 runs on 17 hits. Joe Jablonski picked up the win, yielding one hit in four innings. Eric Snyder pitched a scoreless fifth and David Bowman completed the combined shutout with scoreless sixth and seventh innings.
