#9 Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday versus Gannon University at the Laker Baseball Field. The Lakers claimed game one by a 20-5 score, followed by a 13-2 win in game two. Grand Valley State improved to 18-4 overall and 5-3 in GLIAC action. The Lakers and Knights will conclude the four-game set Sunday beginning at 12 noon.
The Lakers scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. Junior 1B Casey Robrahn opened the inning with a single, followed by a single by SS Justin Beal. 3B Brad Raj reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. DH Jay Tharett singled in the first run of the game with a liner to left. C Bobby Walmsley then drove home a pair with another single to center. The Lakers broke the game open with seven runs on six hits and two Gannon errors in the bottom of the third to take an 11-1 lead. LF Pat Radded drove in two runs with a double to left. GVSU added two runs in the fourth and seven in the sixth on six hits.
1B Casey Robrahn and SS Justin Beal each collected three hits. Beal scored three runs, while driving in two. C Bobby Walmsley drove in three runs and scored three, while LF Matt Nickels also drove in three on two hits. Nickels hit a 2-run HR, his first of the year. CF Pat Radde drove in two runs. Nick Beach improved to 3-0 on the year, yielding four hits and two runs.
GVSU scored a single run in the bottom of the first of game two. 2B Josh Hillyard tripled and came home on a single to center by 1B Casey Robrahn. Hillyard singled and moved to third on a double by RF Derek Hinke in the second. Robrahn grounded out to short to score Hillyard and give GVSU a 2-0 lead. Gannon tied the game in the top of the fourth with two runs on two hits. Grand Valley State broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with nine runs on six hits and three Gannon errors. Hillyard opened the inning with his second triple of the game and came home on Hinke's fourth home run of the year. Robrahn single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Bobby Walmsley drove home two with a double to right and a Hillyard single drove home two more runs. Hillyard's unearned run on a flyout by SS Justin Beal closed the scoring. GVSU added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. PH Brennan Glass doubled to right and advanced to third on an error. Glass came home on a groudout by C Zach Laupp. Pat Radde closed the scoring with a solo HR to right.
Hillyard tallied a season-high four hits, scored four runs and drove in a pair. Robrahn notched three hits and drove in two runs, while Hinke added two hits and three RBIs. Brad Raj improved to 3-0 on the year, yielding two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
