The Grand Valley State women's tennis team earned a 5-4 victory on Saturday over 21st-ranked Drury. The match was close all the way through. Drury took two of three in doubles play but the Lakers rallied to take four out of six in singles to clinch the win. The Lakers improve to 23-5 on the year, and are ranked third in the Great Lakes regional rankings. Drury is ranked second and had just defeated top-ranked Northwood, 5-4. GVSU will face off against Rockhurst on Sunday and Indianapolis on Monday.
The match came down to the No. 6 singles spot. Freshman Jackie Shipman was tied 1-1 going into the third set. In that set, she fell behind 3-0 but rallied for a match-clinching 7-6 (7-4) victory. The Lakers were victorious in No. 3 through No. 6 singles, all in straight sets. Chelsea Johnston won, 6-1, 6-3, while Katelyn Grashorn picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Thu Mai. Darylann Trout picked up the remaining win for GVSU in the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-0. Jenna Killips was ousted in the top singles slot by #32 Laure Piquemal, 6-2, 6-3. Audrey Koopsen was downed by #49-ranked Mouna Sabri, 6-2, 6-2.
Drury played well in doubles, as Sabri and Khryststina Tryboi downed Killips and Zellner in a tight match, 9-8 (8-6). Koopsen and Jaime Oppenlander were defeated by Piquemal and Hankova, 8-3. In the third doubles match, Johnston and Trout beat Lindsey Castrodale and Mai by an 8-4 count.
