Grand Valley State Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Mercyhurst

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday with Mercyhurst, winning game one 12-6, but dropping game two 9-3. GVSU is now 27-11 overall and 13-7 in GLIAC action. Mercyhurst is 23-21 overall and 9-15 in GLIAC action. GVSU and Mercyhurst will play another twinbill Sunday beginning at 12 noon. Grand Valley State will honor its seniors prior to the first game Sunday.

Game 1

GVSU jumped on top early with four runs in the bottom of the first on three hits, followed by three more runs on three hits in the second inning. Mercyhurst pulled to within 7-4 with three runs in the third and another in the fourth, but GVSU put four runs up in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. A single to right by 3B Brad Raj drove home two runs, while a Pat Radde single to center score two. DH Casey Robrahn hit solo HR in the fifth to push the GVSU lead to 12-4. Mercyhurst scored two in the top of the sixth for the final margin of 12-6.

Grand Valley State scored 12 runs on 14 hits. 1B Cory Maguire drove in three runs on two hits, while DH Casey Robrahn was 2-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. SS Justin Beal and 3B Brad Raj each collected a pair of hits and drove in a pair. Andre Benjamin improved to 8-1 on the year, yielding six runs, five earned, on nine hits in 6.2 innings.

Game 2

Mercyhurst scored an unearned run in the top of the first, added another run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. GVSU scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 4-3, but Mercyhurst put five on the board in the top of the seventh to claim a 9-3 win.

Scott Cain recorded a run-scoring triple, while 2B Josh Hillyard and RF Derek Hinke each drove in runs. Hinke was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Maguire was 2-for-3. Nick Beach was tagged with the loss (4-2), yielding seven runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits. Beach struck out six and walked three.
