Grand Valley State University scored 19 runs in 10 innings in a two-game sweep of Hillsdale on Friday, April 25. The Lakers took game one 8-0 and finished the sweep with an 11-3 win in game two. Both games ended after five innings. GVSU is now 26-11 (11-5 GLIAC) on the season and will take on Wayne State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
The Lakers scored eight runs on 11 hits in the first game, while Lori Andjelich (11-6) picked up the win by going five innings. Andjelich gave up three hits and no runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Elizabeth Smith went 1-3 with a run scored and two more brought in. She also hit her fifth home run of the season. Sarah Holland went 3-3 with two runs scored. Rebecca Plummer also went 3-3 with three runs scored and another batted in.
The Lakers jumped on the Chargers early, scoring three runs in the first inning. The biggest hit was a two-run single to right-center field by Plummer that scored Holland and Nichole Woityra. GVSU made the score 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Lisa Preuss singled in Plummer. The final four runs all came in the bottom of the fourth inning. A triple by Kristin Moleski scored Holland and then Smith's homer cleared the bases. Breanne Kronberg doubled down the right-field line to score Plummer and give the Lakers an 8-0 lead that would end the game in the fifth.
The GVSU offense was even better in the second game, scoring 11 runs on thirteen hits. Stephanie Cole (12-4) went four innings, giving up six hits and one run. She walked one and struck out one. Plummer went 2-4 with two runs and two RBI. Kronberg batted in three runs, going 2-3 with another run scored.
The Lakers scored eight runs in the top of the first inning. Plummer plated two with a double down the left-field line. Kronberg scored two more when she doubled to left center. A Karen Walters double scored two more and then singles by Holland and Moleski ended the scoring in the first. A single by Preuss in the second inning scored Plummer and made the score 9-0.
The Chargers scored a run to make it 9-1, but the Lakers tagged on another two runs in the top of the third. Smith doubled in Woityra and then Kronberg doubled in Stephanee Schrader to make it 11-1. Hillsdale scored two on Lauren Rohan in the fifth, but the Lakers held on for an 11-3 win.
