Tiffin, Ohio -
Grand Valley State dropped a pair of eight-inning affairs Thursday at Tiffin. Both games ended with eighth-inning walk-off home runs. Tiffin claimed a 16-15 win in game one, followed by a 5-4 win in game two. GVSU falls to 25-7 overall, while Tiffin improves to 14-14.
Game one
Grand Valley State opened with three runs in the top of the first, but Tiffin came back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. Tiffin added five runs in the third to take a 9-3 lead. GVSU then scored eight runs in the fourth to take an 11-9 lead. RF Derek Hinke, DH Casey Robrahn and 1B Cory Maguire each produced RBI doubles, while SS Justin Beal had a run-scoring triple. The Lakers added four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 15-9 lead. LF Matt Nickels provided the big blow with a two-out, two-run triple. The Lakers were unable to close the game as Tiffin tied the contest with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth. The Dragons won it in the bottom of the eighth with a solo HR with one out.
Nickels was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while 2B Josh Hillyard, Hinke, Robrahn and Maguire each recorded a pair of hits. Hinke drove in three runs and scored three. Eric Snyder was tagged with the loss, despite being the most effective hurler for the Lakers on the day.
Game two
GVSU scored a single run in the first on a sacrafice fly from 1B Casey Robrahn, but Tiffin answered again with three runs in the bottom of the innings on three hits. Tiffin went ahead 4-1 with a single run in the third, but the Lakers pulled to within one (4-3) with two runs in the top of the fourth. 3B Brad Raj singled and 3B Dan Anstedt hit a 2-run HR. RF Derek Hinke opened the seventh with a solo HR to tie the game, but Tiffin ended the contest with a solo HR of its own in the bottom of the eighth.
LF Scott Cain tallied three hits, while Anstedt and Hinke each recorded two hits. Anstedt drove in a pair, while Robrahn and Hinke each drove in a run. Cory Maguire yielded four runs on four hits in five innings of work, while Brandon Dickinson yielded one run on two hits in two innings of action. Dickinson was the pitcher of record.
