#16 Lakers End Spring Trip with Split Against Southern Indiana, Upper Iowa

Kissimmee, Fla. - Grand Valley State University closed out its spring trip by splitting a pair of games against Southern Indiana and Upper Iowa. The No. 16 Lakers lost to Southern Indiana, 4-2, and then took a 5-4 victory over Upper Iowa. GVSU is now 10-4 on the season and takes on Bellarmine in a double-header in Louisville, Ky. at noon on March 15.

In the game against Southern Indiana, Grand Valley State finished with two runs on five hits and committed one error. The Screaming Eagles mustered four runs on seven hits and one error. Lori Andjelich was the pitcher of record for Grand Valley State, going six innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits with no strikeouts. Stephanee Schrader led the Lakers offensively, finishing 3-3 at the plate with two runs batted in.

Grand Valley State claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Rebecca Plummer walked. Schrader doubled to left field in the next at-bat to send her home. Southern Indiana got the run back in the bottom of the third inning. Tara McConnell singled through the right side to start the inning and then made it to third on two straight ground outs. An error by the third baseman brought McConnell home and tied the game at 1-1.

Both teams scored in the fourth inning. In the top half of the frame, Lisa Preuss singled through the left side and went home later in the inning on a single by Schrader. In the bottom of the fourth, a lead-off double followed by a single through the left side tied the game at 2-2. In the top of the sixth inning, Grand Valley State loaded the bases, but couldn't send anyone home, and the Screaming Eagles made them pay. In the bottom of the sixth, three singles scored two runs and made the score 4-2, which ended up being the final score.

In the second game of the day, Grand Valley State scored five runs, including three in the fifth, on nine hits and committed three errors. Stephanie Cole got the win on the mound, throwing six innings and giving up three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Lauren Rohan picked up a save, throwing a scoreless seventh inning with no hits and one strikeout. Plummer went 2-3 at the plate with two runs and one run batted in.

Upper Iowa scored in the top of the second on a two-out RBI single. The Lakers tied it up in the bottom half of the second when Plummer led off with a triple down the left-field line. Breanne Kronberg scored her on a sacrifice fly on the next at-bat. GVSU took the lead later in the inning when Becky Rudenga reached on an error and then scored on a double by Sarah Holland, making the score 2-1. The score became 2-2 when Upper Iowa got an RBI double with one out.

Grand Valley did the majority of their damage in the bottom of the fifth. Preuss doubled to left-center with one out and then Kristin Moleski doubled to right field to bring her home. A third double, this one from Plummer, scored Moleski. The final run came home when Kronberg singled through the left side, making the score 5-4. Upper Iowa scored two in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough, and Grand Valley took home a 5-4 win in their final game of the Rebel Spring Games.
