Grand Valley State University is now 3-1 in the Rebel Spring Games after beating West Virginia Wesleyan and Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday. The No. 13 Lakers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Bobcats and then scored at will in a 7-1 win over the Panthers. GVSU, now 8-2 on the year, will play against SIU-Edwardsville and Mary tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Stephanie Cole maintained her perfect record (3-0) by pitching all seven innings against West Virginia Wesleyan. She struck out two batters while giving up five hits and three runs, two earned. The Lakers scored four runs on 10 hits and committed one error, while the Bobcats scored three runs on five hits with no errors. The Laker offense was led by Kristin Moleski, who went 2-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
The Bobcats jumped out to a one-run lead in the top of the first with an RBI on a ground out to second base. Sarah Holland got the Lakers started in the bottom half of the frame with a double to left-center. Nichole Woityra singled up the middle to send Holland to third, and then a single by Moleski brought her home and tied the game. Later in the inning, Breanne Kronberg singled through the left side to score Moleski and put GVSU up 2-0 after one inning.
The Bobcats retook the lead in the top of the fourth by scoring two runs on two doubles and a single. They held that 3-2 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Grand Valley put two more runs on the board to take the game 4-3. In that inning, Woityra doubled to left field as the first batter. Moleski singled in the next at-bat to bring her home and tie the game at 3-3. Moleski advanced all the way to third base on the throw home and then went home when Elizabeth Smith singled through the right side to end the game.
It was a much more lopsided affair later in the day when GVSU played Kentucky Wesleyan. The Lakers scored seven runs, including five in the first two innings, on 12 hits and committed two errors, while the Panthers scored one run on six hits with one error. Lori Andjelich (3-2) got the win, going seven innings and allowing six hits and one run while striking out six batters. Holland went 2-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and bringing in one more.
Holland walked to start the game and then stole second with two outs. A single to left-center by Smith scored Holland. Smith reached third on a single by Lisa Preuss but Kronberg popped out to the pitched to end the inning. The Panthers tied the game later that inning on a wild pitch by Andjelich. Andjelich recovered and ended the inning with a strike out and a fly out to center field.
With the score tied, Grand Valley State poured it on in the top of the second, scoring four runs to make the score 5-1. Rebecca Plummer singled to right field to start the inning and then stole second. Karen Walters singled to right field and brought her home and then went to second on an error by the right fielder. Holland then tripled to left-center to score Walters. A two-out double by Moleski scored Holland then a single by Smith scored Moleski, in turn. Andjelich shut down the Panthers in the bottom of the second and sent the game into the third at 5-1 in favor of the Lakers.
Neither team scored again until the seventh inning, when Holland opened up the stanza with a double to left-center field. Abbey Rumey singled to right field, scoring Holland and making the score 6-1. Rumsey stole second later in the inning and then scored on a triple by Preuss. That was the last run of the game, as the Panthers left two runners on in the bottom of the frame, ending the game at 7-1 in favor of Grand Valley State.
