Grand Valley State traveled from Ocoee to Kissimmee, Fla. to take part in the Rebel Spring Games. The No. 13 Lakers lost their first game in Kissimmee, a tough 2-1 match against Lewis. They rebounded later in the day with a 7-1 victory over Urbana. GVSU, now 6-2, outhit Lewis 10-4 in the loss, but couldn't score with runners on. Against Urbana, Lauren Rohan advanced her record to 2-0 by holding the Blue Knights to just one run. The Lakers will retake the field tomorrow morning against West Virginia Wesleyan and Kentucky Wesleyan.
Grand Valley State scored one run on 10 hits and committed no errors against Lewis. The Flyers scored two runs on four hits and committed three errors. Lori Andjelich (1-2) took the mound for the Lakers and gave up four hits and two runs while striking out three in six innings of work. Sarah Holland went 2-4 at the plate and notched GVSU's only RBI.
The Lakers left 12 runners on base throughout the game.
Neither team scored a run until the bottom of the third inning, when Lewis grabbed both of their runs. With two outs, the Flyers notched two straight singles. A passed ball put the runners on second and third and then a double brought both of them home to put Lewis up 2-0. GVSU threatened in the top of the fifth when Holland doubled to lead off the inning, but she was picked off later in the inning and the Lakers didn't plate a run. In the sixth, Lisa Preuss doubled at the top of the inning and then scored when Holland singled through the right side. Nichole Woityra fouled out to first base to end the inning and GVSU couldn't score in the seventh, falling 2-1 to Lewis.
The Lakers rebounded against Urbana later in the day, picking up a 7-1 win. The game was rained out in the bottom of the sixth inning. GVSU tallied seven runs on 12 hits with no errors, while the Blue Knights picked up one run on seven hits with no errors. Lauren Rohan (2-0) picked up her second win of the year by going six innings, giving up six hits and one run while striking out four. Holland had another strong game at the plate, going 2-2 with two runs and one RBI. Elizabeth Smith went 3-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.
The Blue Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out RBI single. The Lakers got the run right back by scoring three in the bottom half of the frame. Holland started it off with a triple. It looked like she might not reach home after two straight outs, but a Smith single brought her home. A Preuss double sent Smith to third and then Breanne Kronberg doubled down the left-field line to score both Preuss and Smith, giving GVSU a 3-1 lead after one inning. Grand Valley scored another three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Holland started it off again, this time with a walk. Woityra singled up the middle and then both runners advanced on a passed ball. A triple by Kristin Moleski brought both runners home and then a single by Smith brought Moleski home, in turn, putting the Lakers up 6-1. GVSU scored the last run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Rebecca Plummber singled up the middle to start the inning. Holland singled up the middle later in the inning to bring her home and give GVSU their final lead, 7-1, before the game was called due to rain.
