Andjelich, Cole Allow Three Hits Over 14 Innings in Wins

Ocoee, Fla. - Grand Valley State University picked up another two wins in Ocoee, Fla., defeating Assumption College and Lake Superior State for the second time in three days. Lori Andjelich and Stephanie Cole combined to allow just three hits in 14 innings for the No. 13 Lakers (5-1). Andjelich allowed two hits in a 3-1 win over Assumption and then Cole shut down Lake State, holding them to just one hit in a 4-0 win. Grand Valley has tomorrow off before taking on Lewis and Urbana in Kissimmee, Fla. on March 6.

The Lakers took on Assumption at 9 a.m. and came away with a 3-1 victory. GVSU scored three runs on eight hits with no errors, while Assumption scored one run on two hits and committed no errors. Andjelich went seven innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out seven. Kristin Moleski went 2-4 at the plate with one run scored and Elizabeth Smith went 1-3 with one run batted in to lead the offense.

Neither team could get much offense going through the first three innings as GVSU put two runners on and Assumption managed one. Assumption got on the scoreboard first, turning a leadoff double into a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 1-0. GVSU almost got the run back in the top of the fifth, but left two runners stranded. In the top of the sixth, Moleski doubled to left center with one out and then Smith brought her home with a single up the middle in the next at-bat to tie the game at 1-1. Amanda Rumsey pinch ran for Smith and ended up scoring on a passed ball to give Grand Valley a 2-1 lead at the end of the inning. The Lakers scored their final run of the day in the seventh. Becky Rudenga reached after being hit by a pitch and then Lesley Bates pinch ran for her. Bates came home when Nichole Woityra singled through the left side to make the score 3-1.

In the second game of the day, Grand Valley State picked up a 4-0 win over Lake Superior State. Cole went seven innings and allowed just one hit while striking out five. Grand Valley scored four runs on six hits with two errors, while Lake Superior State collected one hit and committed two errors. Smith led the offense again, going 1-3 with two runs batted in and one run scored.

All the scoring in the game happened in the bottom of the third inning, when GVSU collected a 4-0 lead. Sarah Holland started the frame off with a single up the middle, followed by a bunt single by Woityra. A left field double by Smith brought both of them home. With two outs, Lisa Preuss singled Smith to third and then Rebecca Plummer brought them both home with a double to left center. Lake State threatened a little in the top of the seventh with one hit and two runners on base, but Cole shut the door and preserved the win to advance her record to 2-0 on the year.
