Lakers Drop Two To Saginaw Valley State

Allendale, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State swept a GLIAC double-header from Grand Valley State Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals won game one 7-5 in nine innings and game two 6-5 in 11 innings. GVSU is now 16-4 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will play the West Michigan Whitecaps in an exhibition game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Fifth-Third Ballpark.

Saginaw Valley State scored a single run in the top of the first on one hit and a Laker error. The Cardinals mounted a scoring threat in the top of the third on a hit and a fielders choice that put runners on second and third with one out. However, the runner on third attempted to score on a 6-3 putout and first baseman Cory Maguire threw home to catcher Zach Laupp to nail the runner at home for the double play to get the Lakers out of the inning.

Laupp and LF Matt Nickels drew back-to-back walks with one out and Laupp then scored on a wild pitch that moved Nickels to third. Nickels then scored on a pass ball to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead without the help of a hit. The Lakers pushed across another run in the bottom of the fifth to take 3-1 lead. Pat Radde reached on an error and scored on a single by RF Derek Hinke.

Saginaw Valley State tied the game in the top of the seventh on three hits. A two-out double by C Max Bell tied the game at 3-3. The Cardinals took a 7-3 lead in the top of the ninth with four runs. A solo HR by Kevin Schwedler gave SVSU a 4-3 lead, then Bell doubled home Danny Peterson who walked. Bell then scored on a single by Charlie Thomas. Grand Valley State scored a pair in the bottom of the ninth on a walk, an error and two sacrifice flies to pull within two (7-5).

RF Derek Hinke drove in a pair of runs with one hit. Starting pitcher Nick Beach was not involved in the decision. Beach yielded three runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings. Eric Snyder was tagged with the loss as he gave up three runs on two hits in 1.2 innings.

GVSU scored three runs in the bottom of the third on two hits. 1B Jay Tharrett led off the inning with a hit. A walk and hit batsman loaded the bases. RF Derek Hinke reached on a fielder's choice to score one run. A wild pitch scored CF Pat Radde and Hinke then scored on a single by 3B Dan Anstedt.

Saginaw Valley State scored one run on a Laker error and a double to pull with a 3-1 count. GVSU added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a walk to C Bobby Walmsley. Walmsley then advanced to second on a fielder's choice then came home on a wild pitch and passed ball to up the Laker lead to 4-1.

Saginaw Valley State tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh with an error and three straight hits. The Lakers got out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double play.

Saginaw Valley State scored a single run in the 11th on a bloop single to right and two infield singles for the 6-5 win.
