Grand Valley State University added three more wins to their record in the Salem Virginia Tournament on March 21 and 22. The No. 7 Lakers played three games on Friday and two more on Saturday in the tournament, going 3-2 over the weekend. On day one, the Lakers lost to Alderson-Broaddus 3-2 before taking games against West Virginia State (12-6) and West Virginia Wesleyan (9-1). On the second day, GVSU split two games, taking down West Liberty State (10-2) and losing to Lock Haven (5-0). The Lakers are now 15-6 on the season and will take on Missouri Science & Technology on Tuesday, March 25.
Lauren Rohan pitched against Alderson-Broaddus and gave up three runs, two earned, through seven innings of work. She allowed just three hits and struck out four batters with no walks. Sarah Holland went 2-4 at the plate to pace the Laker offense. Lisa Preuss was 1-3 with a home run and Karen Walters was 2-3 with a double.
The Lakers rebounded from that loss with a 12-6 win over West Virginia State. Stephanie Cole threw 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four. Lori Andjelich came on in relief, going 1.2 innings and giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts. GVSU had a strong performance at the plate, led by Holland, who went 3-4 with a home run, a double and four runs batted in. Rebecca Plummer was 3-5 and Becky Rudenga was 1-3 with a home run. Amanda Rumsey had an efficient day with a home run in her only at-bat.
The final game of day one was against West Virginia Wesleyan and the Lakers needed just five innings to claim the 9-1 victory. Andjelich threw all five innings, giving up one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Holland finished the day with another good performance at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI. Preuss with 2-3 with an RBI, as well, and Breanne Kronberg finished 2-2.
On the second day of the tournament, Grand Valley State picked up a 10-2 win over West Liberty State, another game that took just five innings. Andjelich pitched four of those innings, giving up two runs on five hits with one strikeout. Rohan pitched the final inning, giving up no runs on one hit. Elizabeth Smith had a stellar offensive performance, going 3-3 with two home runs, a double and five runs batted in. Preuss was good, as well, finishing at 2-3.
Grand Valley also dropped a 5-0 game to Lock Haven. Cole pitched all seven innings in the losing effort, giving up five runs on 12 hits with one strikeout. Preuss was the only Laker to have multiple hits, finishing the game at 2-3.
