#5 Grand Valley State split a non-league twinbill at #25 Southern Indiana Saturday afternoon in Evansville, Ind. GVSU won game one by a 14-2 score, while USI came back to win game two 6-4. The Lakers and Eagles will play a single 9-inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET).
The Lakers came out swinging in game one and put four runs on the board in the top of the first. Southern Indiana answered with a single run in the bottom of the first, but GVSU added two more in the third and broke the game open with six in the top of the fourth. USI scored a single run in the fifth, but GVSU closed the game with two more in the top of the sixth for the final margin of 14-2. GVSU scored its nine runs on 16 hits and six Southern Indiana errors. The Laker pitching staff allowed just two runs on five hits.
DH Dan Anstedt was 3-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while RF Derek Hinke was 3-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. CF Casey Robrahn was 1-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. 2B Josh Hillyard drove in a pair of runs on one hit and Justin Beal was 1-4 with an RBI. Senior RHP Nick Beach picked up his first win of the year, yielding two runs on five hits. Brad Raj struck out three and did not allow a hit in three innings of work, while Matt Huml pitched a scoreless ninth.
Grand Valley State started game two strong as well with two runs in the top of the first, however, Southern Indiana scored single runs in the first four innings and added two in the fifth after GVSU tied the game with a single runs in the fourth and the fifth. GVSU had runners on second and third in the top of the seventh with two outs, but a strikeout close the door.
Hinke was 3-4 with a run scored and went 6-for-9 on the day. C Bobby Walmsley and Kruse each tallied a pair of hits. Walmsley drove in one run, Hillyard added another RBI with one hits and 1B Corey Maquire drove in a run and walked. Andre Benjamin yielded four runs on six hits in four innings, but was not involved in the decision. Justin Beal was tagged with the loss, giving up two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Eric Snyder logged 1.1 innings and gave up one hit.
