Grand Valley State opened up a three-game homestand with a 60-49 loss to No. 20 Michigan Tech on Thursday. The Lakers were led by Crystal Zick, who finished with 17 points on 8-24 shooting. As a team, GVSU shot 31.3 (20-64) percent from the field and 16.7 (3-18) percent from long range. The Lakers are now 13-9 on the season and 8-5 in the GLIAC. Their next game is Saturday, Feb. 9 against Northern Michigan with tip-off at 1 p.m.
Zick was joined by Erin Cyplik and Kim Wyngaard in scoring double digits. Cyplik finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Wyngaard chipped in 11 points and a nine rebounds. Nicole Carr grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Katie Wysocky recorded a double-double for Michigan Tech, collecting 20 points 10 rebounds.
Grand Valley took their only lead of the game just 26 seconds in, when Wyngaard put down a layup. A three-pointer by Tara Ferris made the score 3-2 in favor of Michigan Tech, and the Huskies never relinquished the lead, despite one tie in the first half and two ties in the second half. MTU opened up an eight-point lead in the first 8:19 before Wyngaard hit a three at the 11:25 mark to cut the lead to five. On the next possession, Zick hit a jumper to make the score 16-13 with 11:03 left in the half.
The lead went down to two points, 21-19, when Cyplik drove into the lane and made a layup at the 7:47 mark. Another jumper from Zick made the score 23-23 with 4:36 remaining in the first half. The Huskies scored the next five points to take a five-point lead, but Zick hit the last shot of the half, a jumper with 32 seconds left, to make it a three-point game heading into the break.
The teams went through the first 2:06 of the second half scoreless before Carr made a free throw to make the score 28-26. After the Huskies had opened up another five-point gap, Cyplik hit a three and Wyngaard buried two free throws to tie the game at 33-33 with 14:21 left in the game. Wysocky and Zick traded jumpers on the next two possessions to keep the teams tied, 35-35.
MTU scored 14 of the next 15 points to jump out to a 49-36 lead. They grabbed their biggest lead of the game, 17 points, with 1:12 left in the game. With the score 60-43, Grand Valley Scored the last six points, four of them coming from Zick jumpers, to make the final score 60-49.
