Box Score
Detroit, Mich. -
Nicole Carr scored 17 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to keep Grand Valley State from dropping their second-straight game. The Lakers lost to Wayne State by a final score of 71-55 despite the sophomore forward's performance. Grand Valley's record is now 14-11 with a 9-7 mark in the GLIAC. The Lakers' next game will be their home finale in the regular season, taking on Northwood at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21.
Carr was one of two Lakers to score in double figures. Joining her was Kim Wyngaard, who finished the day with 13 points and three rebounds on 5-7 shooting. The Lakers shot well from the free throw line, connecting on 22 of their 27 chances (81.5 percent), but shot just 5.3 percent from behind the arc (1-19). The Lakers out-rebounded the Warriors by a tremendous margin, 41-24, but were hurt by a final line of 27 turnovers to just five assists.
The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Wyngaard made a layup at the 17-minute mark to make the score 5-2. Despite some free throws by Lauren Buresh with 13:32 remaining, the Lakers' next field goal didn't come until the 13:07 mark, a span of 3:53. When Buresh hit that jumper, the score became 15-6 in favor of Wayne State. Wyngaard hit the next Grand Valley make, a layup, at the 7:53 mark, covering another long span of 5:14. By that time the score had become 27-8 Warriors.
Wayne State grabbed their biggest lead of the game, 23 points, at the 6:36 mark of the first half. The score was 31-8 before GVSU rattled off five straight points, capped by a jumper by Carlie Holden with 4:36 left in the half. The Lakers scored eight more points in the first half, but still found themselves facing a significant deficit, 39-21, heading into halftime.
Carr scored four points shortly into the second half to cut the margin to 16 points, 41-25. A layup by Wyngaard made it 14 points, 55-41, with just 5:53 left in the game. The Warriors' lead was cut down to 12 points when Wyngaard made two free throws with 2:55 left in the game to make the score 63-51. WSU made their free throws down the stretch, however, and the Lakers lost by a final score of 71-55.
