Erin Cyplik scored a season-high 20 points, but Grand Valley State still found themselves on the wrong end of a 71-69 decision against Lake Superior State. GVSU held a late three-point lead but fell to 14-10 (9-6) after a jumper by Jaclyn Armstrong with 1.1 seconds left in the game. Grand Valley State's next game will be on Saturday, Feb. 16 against Wayne State in Detroit, Mich. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
Cyplik made a season-high seven field goals, two of them from behind the arc, en route to her season-best performance. Kim Wyngaard added 15 points on 5-8 shooting and Crystal Zick finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. GVSU shot 43.6 (24-55) from the field, but was outscored 34-22 in the paint.
Jocelyn Ingram started the game off with a layup and Cyplik followed it up with one of her own to give Grand Valley a 4-0 lead 1:23 in. Zick hit a jumper at the 17:18 mark to extend the lead to six points, 8-2. Lake Superior cut the lead to one point, 12-11, but Wyngaard buried a three to make it 15-11 at the 10:12 mark.
LSSU took their first lead of the game with 7:45 left in the first half when Alyssa VanderWal completed a three-point play to make the score 18-17 in her team's favor. A jumper by Kelsey Crowley gave Grand Valley a temporary lead at 24-23, but Lake State scored the next eight points to go up 31-24 with just more than three minutes left in the first half. A three-pointer by Elizabeth Van Tiflin and two free throws by Wyngaard cut the lead to two, 31-29, but LSSU scored the last four points of the half. That sent the two teams into the locker rooms with Lake State holding a 35-29 lead.
LSSU extended the lead to eight points, 42-34, on a three-pointer by Shelle Rochon with 17:11 remaining in the game. A Wyngaard three-pointer capped a five-point run by GVSU to make the lead just three points, 42-39. Grand Valley took the lead once again with 13:13 left when Ingram buried a long ball. The teams traded baskets at that point, with three ties over the next 4:19.
GVSU then retook the lead 55-54 on two Zick free throws. Zick made a jumper on the next possession to make the score 57-54 in favor of Grand Valley. Down 65-63, Zick completed a big three-point play, hitting the free throw to put her team up 66-65. She followed that up with a three-pointer to give the Lakers a four-point lead with 2:13 left. A free throw by Jaclyn Armstrong, followed by a three-pointer by Rochon with 43 seconds left tied the game at 69-69. After a missed three-pointer by Cyplik with 18 seconds left, Armstrong hit a jumper in the paint to give her team a 71-69 lead. With only 1.1 seconds left, GVSU didn't have time to get down the court and fell by just two points.
