GVSU Claims 72-63 GLIAC Road Win Over Ashland

Ashland, Ohio - Freshman guard Jasmin Padin led five Lakers in double figures with a career-high 18 points as Grand Valley State claimed a 72-63 road victory over previously undefeated Ashland Saturday afternoon. GVSU improves to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC action, while Ashland falls to 5-1 and 1-1.

Grand Valley State trailed 12-11 at the 13:41 mark of the first half, but sophomore forward Kara Crawford started a 10-0 run with a jumper in the paint. Freshman guard Emma Veach upped GVSU's lead to 13 (36-23) with a jumper at the 2:36 mark in the first half as GVSU went into the lockerroom with a 40-28 lead. Grand Valley State led 50-32 when senior forward Kim Wyngaard hit a pair of free throws with 16:13 remaining. However, Ashland went on a 18-2 run and cut the GVSU lead down to two (52-50) when Betsy Morrison hit two from the charity stripe with 11:23 left. After trading baskets, Wyngaard hit a free throw, followed by a layup from Veach and a three-pointer from Padin to up the GVSU lead to 60-52. Padin hit another three to give the Lakers a 63-54 lead with 5:25 left in the game. The Lakers hit 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final 4:52 to clinch the win.

Padin scored a career-high 18 points and hit three 3-pointers, while Wyngaard scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds. Veach added 11 points and four assists, while Crawford chipped in 10 points and pulled down five rebounds. Elizabeth VanTiflin was the fifth Laker in double figures with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. GVSU hit 18-of-24 from the charity stripe and collected nine steals on the day. The Lakers also held a 41-40 rebounding advantage.

Grand Valley State will host Findlay at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena next Saturday (Dec. 13) at 1 p.m.
