Lakers Win 66-55 at Tiffin in First GLIAC Road Game

TIFFIN, Ohio - Freshman guard Jasmine Padin scored a career-high 15 points to help Grand Valley State win its first GLIAC road game of the season. The Lakers (4-2) downed the Dragons by a score of 66-55 with three GVSU players scoring in double-figures, led by a team-high 17 from sophomore Kara Crawford.

Crawford finished with 17 points and six rebounds while senior forward Kim Wyngaard grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with her 16 points. Padin scored 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the charity stripe and dished out a team-high five assists.

Tiffin scored the first five points of the game before sophomore forward Elizabeth Van Tiflin hit a jumper after the first 3:32 of the game. A three-pointer from Taylor Silas gave GVSU its first lead of the game at 9-7 with 12:24 left in the first. That three-pointer was part of a 15-0 Grand Valley State run that put the Lakers up 17-7.

Two free throws by Van Tiflin extended the Laker lead to 23-12 with just more than four minutes remaining in the opening half. With Grand Valley holding a 10-point lead, the Dragons scored five consecutive points make it 26-21 in favor of the Lakers. Wyngaard hit two free throws with 13 seconds left in the half to send the teams into the locker room at 28-21, Grand Valley State.

Crawford started the second half with a three-pointer to re-establish the 10-point Grand Valley State lead. Wyngaard and Crawford hit back-to-back jumpers to make it 35-21 before Tiffin scored in the second half. That lead ballooned to 20 points, 46-26, after another Crawford jumper at the 13:52 mark of the second stanza.

Freshman Emma Veach scored four consecutive points after the midway point of the second half and then Padin hit a free throw to give GVSU a 24-point lead, 57-33, with 8:26 left in the game. Tiffin went on a 16-2 run to cut the Laker lead to 10 points. A free throw by Veach with 23 seconds left closed the game with Grand Valley State leading 66-55.

The Lakers shot 44.4 percent from the field while holding the Dragons to 26.2 percent shooting from the floor.
